In 2011, a self-taught lighting designer named David Mitchell founded David Alexander Lighting in Oakland, California. This was the time of the exploding Bay Area maker movement which celebrated authenticity and American craftsmanship. All around him was the dichotomy between tough and raw, creative and exciting. Putting down his roots in Oakland’s thriving maker community helped inform his design aesthetic, which can be summarized in one word: juxtaposition.
Reflecting his love of minimalism, brass and steel is configured in simple arrangements which elevate the organic imperfections of his crown jewel:
the glass. Raw-edged, honed glass by acclaimed Bay Area glass sculptor, Latchezar Boyadjiev, is nebulous and dreamlike, a stark contrast to the primal metal. It is the juxtaposition of these materials that reflects Oakland’s diversity and evolution. The result is a masterful collaboration between the craftsmen, who leave their unique mark on the transcendent designs.
